We are very proud to introduce and look forward to developing our new Thrive curriculum at WFS.


What is the Thrive Approach?

Children cannot always put their needs into words, but the way they behave can tell us a lot about how they are feeling. The Thrive approach draws on the latest materials and sources from neuroscience, attachment research, current studies of effective learning and child development- in order to help school understand the needs being signalled by children's behaviour. It provides an assessment tool, which then provides targeted strategies and activities to help pupils re-engage with learning and life.

So who gets Thrive?

At times we use Thrive with individual children whilst on other occasions the approaches are tailored to meet the needs of whole classes. For individual children we work hand in hand with them and their parents to complete screenings and observations which lead us to an action plan which includes an exciting activity programme.

The activities are one-to-one and small group relational, play and art based tasks. The emphasis is on providing positive, descriptive feedback to children. Activities are based on the arts, unleashing children's creative talents and the ideas of cause and effect and problem solving. We use pencils, chalks and paint, sand trays, feathers, straws and mirrors, seeds, shells, and conkers any materials that enable children to creatively express their thoughts, emotions and sensations. By working in this extremely focused way, the activities are designed to promote self-esteem, pupils to become more resilient and resourceful, form trusting and rewarding relationships, become more compassionate and empathic and learn strategies to support them to overcome difficulties and setbacks. It really makes a difference to their social and emotional abilities. The action plans are reviewed regularly to see the progress pupils have made.

How can Thrive help parents?

Thrive includes and values every parent and their families, providing benefits for them which include:

  • An increased understanding of what is happening for their child, often during inevitable and tricky times which many parents experience
  • A more active sense of partnerships with school, teaching and wider staff and their child
  • Reduced anxiety through a real feeling of support
  • An increased sense of control, knowing there are things they can do which help their child
  • More confidence to play an active and supportive role in their child’s development and education.

What makes WFS a Thrive School?

The Thrive approach is about an ethos, a whole school approach.  Love, laughter, empathy, acceptance and being curious to children's lives and learning experiences are key to our approach at WFS.

What we recognise is that the quality of relationships with pupils, parents, families and school, are significantly important- they help to build healthy brains!  This enables access to learning and supports children to gain skills for future successes in society.  Our overarching aim is for young people to leave Wyre Forest School with a solid foundation and equip them with the building blocks for life.

We value the fact that feelings are closely linked to behaviour and emotions are key to the learning process. It is important that we teach children to recognise and notice their sensations and then link these to their emotions and their thoughts. We build their cognitive, relational and physiological regulation systems so that they can see cause and effect and begin to make real choices, with some understanding of their consequences. This has enormous impact on behaviour, on relationships, on being available to learn and on being productive and engaged in human society.

All children and especially vulnerable children and those with troubling or challenging behaviour are helped to develop emotional resilience and engage or re-engage with learning. Through repeated relational experiences we aim to provide our young people with the emotional resilience needed to cope with life’s trials and aid their transition into adulthood.
